Anyone can have a
blog. But, if you want your blog read by a large audience
and if you want to make money from your writings, your
blog must rank high in the search engines. Optimising your
blog for the search engines is rather straightforward, but
be forewarned it will take work.
Focus on content
- Ask any
successful internet marketer,
and they'll likely agree that content IS king. Without good
content, your blog isn't going make it into the search
engines. What's more, your content should be keyword rich.
Use a keyword tool, like Word Tracker, to determine which
keywords in your niche are the hottest.
Once you've
decided on your keywords, add those keywords to your
content. While you want to use keywords in your content,
make sure you don't use them so much they become overbearing
and the post becomes unreadable. Also add your keywords to
the headline of your post.
Choose a niche
- While
technically you can have success with a blog that covers any
and all topics, you'll likely experience even more success
when you focus on a specific niche. Establish yourself as an
expert in your niche by
posting consistently on your topic.
Regularly update
your blog
- Update
your blog as often as you can. Every time you update your
blog, the search engines will index your site, ensuring that
your blog ranks and stays ranked higher in the search
engines.
Use links
- If you
reference something on another page of your blog, link to
it. In fact, both links and a site map will make it much
easier for the search engines to find your blog and your new
content.
Purchase your own
domain name
- There
are plenty of free blogging platforms, such as Blogger.com,
that allow you to easily start your own blog. The problem is
you'll have to adhere to the rules of that particular
blogging company. When you purchase your own domain name,
you have full control over your blog.
Before you
purchase your own domain name, brainstorm ideas for names.
For example, is there a domain name available that includes
a consistently popular keyword in it?
Never use
duplicate content
- The
search engines, particularly Google, frown upon duplicate
content. For example, if you post an article on your blog
then post that same article on Squidoo or
submit it to an
article directory, you've just created duplicate
content. Avoid it. Rather, rewrite the content to avoid any
duplication.
